Visiting Binalup, Menang | First Light, First People in Albany was a powerful reminder that the stories of our Elders, our history and our culture deserve to be seen, shared and celebrated.

This moving exhibition, presented by the City of Albany, is a collaboration between Menang Elder Aunty Carol Pettersen and award-winning portrait photographer Nic Duncan, honouring the lives, stories and enduring contributions of Menang people. Seeing her Nan recognised in this way filled Mel with so much pride and gratitude.

Every story passed down strengthens our connection to Country, culture and the generations to come. Thank you to everyone involved in creating such a meaningful legacy that celebrates our Elders and ensures their stories continue to inspire future generations 🖤💛❤️

What a special day on Wadjemup 🫶🏿

Mel was incredibly grateful to be invited by @koordas_crew to attend the Koolangka Kaadadjiny Children's Learning Workshop, sharing the experience with family and friends.

It was great to see our young ones learning about Noongar culture, hearing the stories of Country, acknowledging the island's history, and feeling welcomed and connected in such a meaningful way.

A huge thank you to Aunty Casey and Uncle Dylan from Koordas Crew for your generosity and for creating such a safe, welcoming and culturally rich day for our community. And thank you to the @rottnestislandwa for supporting this important opportunity for Aboriginal families to reconnect with Country.

Days like these remind us that culture is strongest when it is shared, celebrated and passed on 🤎

The Djooditj represents agility, resilience and a strong, adventurous spirit — symbolising movement, growth and each person’s journey towards new opportunities. Like the Djooditj travelling across Country, this artwork reflects strength, independence and the support that empowers communities to move forward.
