This painting represents Mel's interpretation of the dreamtime story “The Seven Sisters”.

The Seven Sisters are running away from the man who wants to take one of the sisters as his wife. They travel across the land (represented by the sand on the painting) and launch themselves into the sky each night to attempt to escape. The Seven Sisters are forever moving, as they run away from the man pursing the sisters as he is in the wrong skin group, and it is forbidden under traditional law.​
